10 Great Ways to Watch TV Online
Cutting your cable subscription doesn't mean you have to miss your favorite shows. There are more ways than ever to watch TV online; we've outlined our ten favorites below. Best of all, lots of content is completely--and legally--free.
1. Hulu
Probably the best-known site for watching TV online, Hulu
has content from lots of networks (like ABC, NBC, and Comedy Central),
and you can subscribe to shows so that you never have to miss an
episode of Lost again.
2. Clicker
Clicker is like TV Guide
for internet content. Search by category, title, price (available free
legally or for sale on iTunes or Amazon), etc. You can also search for
webisodes, and music.
3. YouTube
It's no longer just a site to watch people's cat videos--YouTube now offers some full episodes, webisodes, and full-length movies, though the pickings still tilt toward clips.
4. Joost
Joost adds a social networking element to internet TV: see what
your friends are watching and find suggestions from people who share
your taste in TV.
5. Fancast
Fancast, created by Comcast, combines "real" TV listings with
streaming video. You can watch a few full-length movies and search
shows by channel and genre.
6. SideReel
SideReel streams and links to video around the internet. It has a particularly large anime section.
7. Boxee
Use Boxee to stream
content from the internet and your computer onto your TV. If you don't
have cable but do have a TV and like watching shows on a bigger screen,
download Boxee.
If you already have a Netflix subscription, Netflix Watch
Instantly allows you to watch tons of shows (and movies) on your
computer at no additional cost (and you can stream them onto your TV if
you have an Xbox 360, PS3, or various other devices; Boxee also has a
Netflix app). While many of the DVDs you can rent on Netflix aren't
currently available to watch instantly, there's tons of content here:
You'll find full seasons of Lost, Heroes, and other favorites.
9. iTunes
Buying an episode or movie on iTunes
is just like buying a song: Download it and watch it on your computer
or other device. HD episodes are $2.99 and standard episodes are $1.99,
though Apple is trying to get networks to agree to drop prices to
$0.99. You can also buy full seasons of shows.
With Amazon Video on Demand,
shop for commercial-free content and watch it instantly on your
computer, stream it onto your TV, or watch with Tivo and other devices.
As on iTunes, HD episodes are $2.99 and standard $1.99. The free
content consists mainly of show previews and other clips. You can also
buy full seasons of shows.
