Celebrities and politicians alike have taken to Twitter, which allows these high profile people to directly connect with their public audience. Everyone has a voice on this platform, but some are just heard louder than others. Today, we bring you ten of the most widely followed, influential people on Twitter who have impacted our present culture and continue to have an effect on society.

1. Barack Obama

As the current President of the United States of America, Barack Obama has the world attentively watching and listening to him. In fact, President Obama has had all eyes and ears on him since his election campaign and win in 2008 and his subsequent inauguration in 2009. Twitter has played a vital role in keeping the President and the people connected to one another and spreading the President's stance on hot topics--most notably, in recent news, includes his support of marriage equality. While his Twitter account is primarily controlled by his campaign staff, he does occasionally take the time out to tweet to his 15 million followers. With the 2012 presidential election approaching, this Twitter account is one to keep a close watch on for the latest in the President's campaign trail.

2. Pete Cashmore

Pete Cashmore is the founder and CEO of Mashable, a leading news website "dedicated to covering digital culture, social media and technology." Cashmore, who is only 26 years old, was recently crowned the most influential person in the world on the 2012 TIME 100 list. Having made quite the name for himself, the social news guru's professional account, whose 50,000+ tweets consist of the latest news article on Mashable, has gained close to 3 million followers. Cashmore also has a personal Twitter account which is less frequently updated.

3. Oprah Winfrey

Oprah Winfrey has many titles including actress, producer, and media mogul with her own television network (OWN) and magazine (O). She is the former television host of her own talk show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, that was widely received and revered for the distance it took from the typical tabloid talk show in the 90's. For years, she has managed to grow in popularity and make a name for herself as a strong and likable force in the public eye. Like her talk show, Winfrey expresses empathy and compassion for real people and social issues. She utilizes her Twitter account to share inspiring words and write back to the public, which makes a significant difference in the effectiveness of her words.

4. Stephen Fry

Actor, writer, and comedian Stephen Fry is an active and veritable force on Twitter. With over 4 million followers, the British humorist was an early adopter of the quick status updating platform in 2008. The increased popularity of Twitter in the UK is due in large part to the wordsmith's activity on the social networking site. Fry has managed to grow his humble following from his early years on Twitter with his clever wit. He has garnered a loyal internet following, leading some fans to profess their love for him in equally creative and humorous ways.

5. Felicia Day

Just shy of 2 million followers, actress, writer, and producer Felicia Day's influence through her avid use of Twitter has been known to crash sites, simply by tweeting links to them. She is, arguably, the queen of the geeks and gamers. The media maven has cornered the market on gaming and evolved the future of new media with the introduction of her wildly popular web series The Guild, which premiered on YouTube in 2007. Nearly 5 years later, she has managed to build a career out of creating original web content and even launched a YouTube channel called Geek & Sundry that features original shows geared towards indie geek culture everyday.

6. Conan O'Brien

Comedian, writer, and late night talk show host Conan O'Brien has amassed an army of followers who have branded themselves as members of Team Coco, following his controversial exit in 2010 as host of The Tonight Show. After his last day on the popular late night talk show, the funny man took to Twitter, whose profile comically read "I had a show. Then I had a different show. Now I have a Twitter account." This self-humility proved useful for the charismatic comic who went on to do a sold out 30-city tour, star in his own documentary called Conan O'Brien Can't Stop, and finally host a late night talk show, yet again, simply called Conan.

7. Ryan Seacrest

Radio and television host Ryan Seacrest has his finger on the pulse of pop culture, which is surely appreciated by more than 6 million Twitter followers. Seacrest began his hosting career at the age of 16 as an intern at WSTR FM in Atlanta, Georgia and continued to pursue his dream, following in the footsteps of Dick Clark. He soared to fame 12 years later as the co-host of American Idol. Seacrest continues to host the hit reality TV series and his own national radio show, On Air with Ryan Seacrest. Today, he is also an accomplished producer of reality television.

8. Rachel Maddow

Author and television host Rachel Maddow is best known for her nightly political news show on MSNBC, aptly titled The Rachel Maddow Show. She is self-admittedly a liberal and respected by her colleagues for her educated political commentary that is devoid of feverish banter. With over 2 million followers, Maddow consistently tweets her opinions on political news across the globe, focusing on national stories. The political pundit regularly shares articles related to politics and social issues and isn't afraid of being vocal with her own two cents.

9. Roger Ebert

Renowned film critic Roger Ebert is a frequent Twitter user with over 26,000 tweets and counting. The film aficionado began his career as a critic in 1967, writing for the Chicago Sun-Times. It is over 40 years later and Ebert continues to write reviews for the latest films, critiquing their plots and entertainment value. His sharp observations and endless perspectives keep readers interested specifically in his opinions, relying on his approval or objection to a film's worthiness of attention. In addition to tweeting his own blog posts and other articles related to his passion for film, Ebert often tackles the subject of politics, sharing articles by political experts and lending his sarcastic responses.

10. Russell Brand

British actor and comedian Russell Brand was first introduced to American audiences in 2008 in the film Forgetting Sarah Marshall. From then on, he proceeded to regale global audiences with his quick wit, crafty wordplay, and interesting wardrobe choices. The eccentric, outspoken comic currently has over 4.6 million Twitter followers who revel in his humor. In recent news, Brand has used his wordy humor in Parliament where he had taken a serious stand in the political issue of British drug policy.

Any avid music-lover is well aware of their borderline unhealthy obsession with a good beat. You know who you are. You're the person who can't go five seconds of walking down the street without throwing on those massive headphones and rocking out to the latest Drake tune or classic Zeppelin song. There's nothing wrong with this. In fact, this addiction to music is experienced by millions of people all over the world. What is wrong is listening to that classic jam without the necessary equipment. Considering the surplus of awesome new gadgets to enhance your listening experience, playing your favorite song on an old Discman is like driving to work with a horse and buggy. It may be vintage-chic, but it's completely inefficient and extremely outdated.

Now, many of you may be thinking, "I'm so overwhelmed! There are just too many devices out there to even know where to start." Fear not my music-loving friend, as Trend Hunter has an array of gadgets that will make those plain white iPod earbuds look like useless pieces of string hanging from your head. From headphones that emit a delicious chocolate aroma to classic speakers incorporated into cedar cigar cases, Trend Hunter has broken down five of the best and most original gadgets to enhance your music-listening experience.

Sonic Walk Igniter

Have you ever tried running in the rain? If you're one of those people who feels like an Olympic athlete because hypothermia is about to set in and you feel "tough," just remember your iPod doesn't quite share those sentiments. A drop of water can turn your precious music blaster into a fried and sizzling piece of electronic mess. To counter this potential disaster, the Sonic Walk Igniter was invented for those who enjoy keeping their iPods in one piece, and feel invigorated when the heavens open up to relieve themselves. The contraption is also lightweight, ensuring runners aren't bogged down with unnecessary equipment and lack of tunes.
$120

The Speaker Vest
For those who lived through the 90s, you'll remember hip-hop artists in popular rap videos jamming to a heavy boombox resting on their shoulder. While this may look "cool," I'm sure the muscle cramping that occurred from carrying a 20-pound weight in that position was not. Fast-forward a couple decades and many neck problems later, and Joey Andolina decided to bring back this popular craze with a bit more practicality. The Speaker Vest moves this music-pumping machine to the back and is attached to a durable piece of clothing. This allows users to walk around, listening to tunes without worrying about potential injuries. The design also looks badass, so if you're going for the Terminator look feel free to add a pair of shades to this outfit and put on an Arnie accent.

$850

Sound Like Chocolate Headphones
Although walking the streets with a pair of good-looking headphones looks sly, the smell that eventually emits from these bad boys is not pleasant. Sweat is just one of those bodily functions that's hard to ignore, and if you're someone who likes a good jog every now and then, an ill-fated aroma will eventually encase your much-loved headset. But what if there was a way to avoid this audacity? What if your headphones smelled like...chocolate? Although some may scoff at this ridiculous statement, the good people over at Fu-Bi decided to give it a try. The 'Sound Like Chocolate' headphones not only blast beats, but smell like delicious chocolate melting on a warm summers day. Perhaps more suited to women (or the real man who fully embraces his inner chocolate cravings), this gadget would be the perfect gift for Valentine's Day for all the tune-jamming lasses out there.

$77

Cedar Cigar Box Powered Speakers
For those who enjoy a good cigar but are concerned about the affects on health, the Cedar Cigar Box Powered Speakers make for a smart-living happy medium. These sturdy music blasters have a retro look, but don't be fooled into thinking they can't pack a mean punch. Just imagine your next dinner party with these pumping a few classic Frank Sinatra soundtracks to entertain the guests. The design screams timeless, and demonstrates to visitors your impeccable sense of style. Although bigger speakers may do the trick, they will not get you brownie points when it comes to suaveness. If you're in the mood to splurge, you can even light up a Cuban.

$350

Spin Headphones

Last, but certainly not least in this comprehensive overview of must-have gadgets is a set of headphones to turn nomads into DJ pros. Sure, making beats in your bedroom is fun, but who wants to be confined to this cramped space? You sound cool saying you're mixing some tracks, but doing this at home on a Friday night is not exactly the epitome of hot. To avoid this embarrassing ordeal, the Spin Headphones allow wanderers to sample songs through one headphone, and scratch with the other. Users are thus able to make music on the go, and can even get some exercise at the same time.

His trusty gadget? The incomparable Intel-Inspired Ultrabook™. It's the perfect companion for scaling the one of the world's most challenging mountains - ultra sleek, ultra thin and ultra light.

Here's Marty's latest dispatch:

Namaste everyone following our climb of Everest in 2012. All is going well with our team. It is so important to stay healthy upon this land of the Himalayas. The famous Everest Base Camp (EBC) trek is well known around the world for being one of the most beautiful walks on this earth of ours. We had a wonderful trekking team that followed us to our Everest BC and made it one day behind the climbing team. They would have been trekking alongside us the whole way but for their flight into Lukla was 15 minutes too late for the landing and so they had to turn around and land at another airstrip. The trekking team made it to EBC and enjoyed a day and night with the climbing team. During this time, one of the climbing teammates, AB is his name and he is from Australia, needed a bit more time to acclimatize during our trek and so I stayed with him in Periche. We started our trek to EBC and came across the trekking team coming out. We had a good catch up and congratulated them for a great accomplishment. I especially enjoyed seeing Jack and Steph complete this goal for they both were with my son and I on Mount Rainier last year.

During the past 3 days we have been enjoying Base Camp, resting, getting our summit gear together, making sure it all checks out, training on the steep ice with getting use to swinging tools and cramponing, using the fixed lines, taking a half day to climb up the Khumbu Ice Fall to train on the ladders that span the deep crevasses. More rest time with plenty of good food to eat each day. Joshua from Ecuador, my follow guide, and I are having great chess matches. Reminds me of glorious days on Denali with my son Denali playing endless matches of chess, what a treat to look forward to.

Our team is now down the valley climbing Kala Pattard, at around 5,600 meters to sleep the night for another acclimatization training day. This all helps us be prepared for when we move through the Khumbu Ice Fall and on to our camp 1 at 6000 meters. All this will happen in a few days from now.

With this dispatch, I want to send more photos.
There is one with a monk trekking to EBC.

Oasis Sun, a great sponsor for many years during my expeditions.

A photo of my EBC home away from home, inside working with the best Intel computers and the SSD, fast, light weight tools that I am finding out to be working better than ever in these extreme environments, (if this Intel works so well up here just think how it works around the cities.) I will be climbing with my Intel computer to each camp and boot it up on the summit of Everest.

The last photo is with Sonam and his cousin. Giannina, my lovely wife and I have been sponsoring Sonam and his family with putting them through their schooling in Kathmandu since 2008. This is when we met, Sonam was on an Everest Expedition and Giannina and I were guiding Tim Burns on Everest, climbing it in fair means, with no Sherpa's or no 02 and just a 1 to 1 ratio. Good thoughts to Tim about having the best go on Everest with this purest style of climbing the highest mountain on this earth. Miss you Tim. What a joy it is to be back on Everest with Sonam.

These words will give you a good update with what we are doing in the Himalayas during this pre monsoon 2012 season. Looking forward to getting the team to camp 1 and 2 during the next few weeks. I will send more words to my son Denali for him to send out to you all about how our days are getting on while preparing for our summit bid by mid-May.

So it is my pleasure to send these words to you all with joy and contentment of working hard on Everest, a mighty goal for any human being.

Till next time, much love and light from the Himalayas, cheers, Marty.

But even the most diligent pet owners can sometimes find themselves faced with a dog or cat that's managed to go AWOL. In those heart-wrenching situations, a microchip can make the difference between hours, days, or weeks of fruitless searching and a quick reunion with your beloved animal.

If you've bought or adopted a pet within the last few years, you've probably heard of microchipping. It's a process that has largely become standard procedure in most adoption centers and vet clinics, frequently included with the standard new pet services like vaccinations and spaying or neutering. Despite the high-tech name, we're not actually talking about turning your puppy into a robot. Microchipping is actually a very simple procedure.

Preparing our robot puppy overlords

A microchip implant is a tiny, integrated circuit placed under the skin of a dog, cat, or other animal. Using passive RFID technology, it contains an identification number that is linked to a database. Pet owners can register their pet's microchip through various websites so that if the animal is ever lost or stolen and then found, a shelter or veterinarian can return the animal where it belongs.

The chip itself is just a tiny bit bigger than a grain of rice, and it can be implanted without anesthesia in just a few minutes at a vet's office. It doesn't hurt the animal at all, and once it's in place, neither you nor your pet will even know it's there.

Standards and information

When pet microchips first became available, every company that made a chip used its own database and its own radio frequency, requiring a proprietary scanner to read. This proved to be a huge issue for shelters and clinics, which needed multiple scanners in order to check the animals that came in.

Thankfully, most manufacturers now follow the International Standards Organization (ISO) guidelines for animal microchips so that any chip created following those guidelines can be read by any scanner. The United States doesn't require that animals be tagged with an ISO-compliant chip, but several other countries do. In the United States, vets and shelters must rely on scanners that can read the ISO chips and the four major types of proprietary chips available today.

Show me some identification

The chip itself isn't like a driver's license, containing a lot of identifying information, nor is it a GPS location device. The only information the chip contains is a unique identification number and sometimes the phone number or website for the registry of the company that produced the chip.

It's up to you, the pet owner, to make sure that you register the chip and keep your information up to date. The vet, shelter, or adoption agency where you acquired your pet should provide you with the instructions for setting this up initially. If you move or change phone numbers, make sure you update the chip registry!

Beam me home, Scotty

A study cited by the American Veterinary Medicine Association points out that lost dogs and cats with microchips are successfully returned to their owners 52.2% and 38.5% of the time, respectively, versus just 21.9% and 1.8% for dogs and cats without microchips. Even pets that have traveled thousands of miles have still been reunited with their owners, thanks to microchips.

One piece in the responsible pet owner puzzle

Being a responsible pet owner is an ongoing process. Your furry companion needs regular veterinary care, and it's a great idea to ask your vet to scan your pet's microchip whenever Fluffy's in for a checkup just to make sure it's still in working order.

While the microchip technology is very well tested, it's not completely foolproof. Make sure that your dog or cat is wearing a collar and tags at all times, including at least one tag with a phone number where you can be reached. If Fido wanders down the road and is picked up by a good Samaritan, it's much easier for that person to call the number on his tag than figure out how to get him to a vet to read the microchip.

The heartache and angst of losing a pet can be devastating, but planning and diligence -- and a little dose of technology -- will give your beloved companion a much greater chance of finding his way home!

MP3 formatting has changed the way we listen to music, allowing for consumers to hold massive libraries of content without the hassle of a physical collection, or excessive digital storage. Compact Disc audio and MP3s are both digital audio-- instead of creating sound waves with physical technology-- like the grooves of a vinyl record-- digital audio recreates sound waves with samples, a numerical value assigned to each frequency in the spectrum of what you're hearing. Many people realize that there is a difference in quality, but don't necessarily know why. The MP3 isn't a replacement for CD quality, and here's why:

1. Size Matters

CD audio is uncompressed. What that means is the average CD can hold 80 minutes of music, or about 700MB of sample data, and the typical track winds up being around 30-40 MB in size, which was certainly unrealistic for early portable devices with limited memory. The MP3 encoding reduces this file size to about 3-4MB per song, a much more manageable size for a digital library. But this reduction comes at a cost. There is even a difference between a 2MB song and a 4MB, even if it's the same song, and the size differential seems negligible. Even when you "rip" a CD into iTunes or a similar program, depending on your settings, it converts the CD-quality files into a smaller format.

2. Quality vs. Quantity
The reduced file size allows for a library of 10,000 songs or more on your iPod, but you sacrifice quality. MP3 audio is compressed in a way that removes certain samples from the file in order to trick your ears into thinking they are still there. The variety of bit-rates and sample quality (typically 128 kbps is considered "poor", and 320 kbps is a high-quality MP3) will give you some variance in sound quality, but only the trained ear would be able to clearly hear the difference between a high-quality MP3 and a CD-quality file when listening on an average pair of headphones. That being said, when you look at the reasons for compressed audio existing, it becomes pretty clear that it's a quality vs. quantity game.

3. Lack of Standardization

While there are standardized formats (Amazon's MP3 store, iTunes AAC files), the prominence of MP3 technology has led to a myriad of different file types, shapes, sizes, samples rates, and qualities. Simply obtaining a song in the MP3 format does not guarantee the compression or the clarity of the audio. Also, when an album is recorded, it goes through a final process called "mastering." If this is done with the intention of having the best quality audio, even more might be lost in the compression process. Some artists have opted to master their albums with the intention of turning them into MP3s, in which case the CD "quality" audio may not sound all that spectacular.

The average ear can still discern a decent quality file from one that has been poorly created, and if the numbers mumbo-jumbo doesn't suit you, there are a few tricks to telling how much has been removed from the samples in your file.

Things to listen for when judging the quality of your audio:

1. Listen to the cymbal decay. When the drummer hits a crash cymbal, does it sound clean and even, or does it get a bit glitchy and sound almost computerized? Any suspect distortion is probably an indication of poor quality.

2. Can you clearly hear the separation between the guitar, bass, and vocals? Or is it all a bit muddled, like you're looking through frosted glass?

3. Is there a weird digitized buzz covering all the sounds? Weird swirling metallic sounds that don't belong in the mix?

Keep in mind that the style and era of music might affect how clear the audio is. If you're looking for a type of music that is always intentionally clean, try a modern classical recording. Older recordings (like early Beatles) will sound less clear because the recording technology used in the process was inferior to what's available today. MP3 technology may sound good to the majority of listeners, but audiophiles know the difference. The reason MP3s aren't ready to replace CDs just yet is because the MP3 is essentially a trick-- specific sounds are removed with the intention of fooling your ears into thinking they are still there-- and when your brain has to work too hard to fill in the blanks, it gets tired of listening.

In the last few decades, a large community of hardcore gamers have emerged. Why are so many people drawn to video games? It actually makes a lot of sense: video games provide hours of interactive entertainment. With continuing advancements in technology and improved graphics, they are all the more enticing and attractive. The marketability of video games, in addition to the entertainment value, stems from the responsive recreational activity being accessible from the comfort of one's own home. Instead of just watching a TV show or movie like a mindless drone, there is a sense of accomplishment with video games that are won at the hands of the gamer. Strategy and hand-eye coordination are incredibly important in gaining this sense of achievement. For those gamers out there who revel in the joy of beating a stage and saving the princess, today we bring you the best YouTube channels to learn gaming techniques and tips to attain that victory.

I read all the books on the history of espionage, watched all the James Bond movies, and I had the complete line of Spy Tech toys (including the cool rearview mirror sunglasses). I even dabbled in codes and invisible inks. My targets were usually unsuspecting siblings, our family's suspiciously aloof cat, and annoying neighbor kids.

Even though I'm an adult, I still love the intrigue of cloak and dagger operations. While I'll never be a part of the CIA or MI6, thanks to a booming home and personal security industry that sells real spy technology to civilians, I can at least have a few of the cool toys that spies throughout history have used.

Below we highlight some spy gear and apps for everyday civilian use. Some of the items we highlight simply have a fun factor, while others have practical home and personal security applications. Put on your dark shades and flip up your trench coat collars. It's spying time.

Hollow Spy Coins

Hollow coins have been used by spies all over the world for almost a century and were especially popular during the Cold War. The coins were made of two halves that screwed together in a virtually undetectable way, and they could be used to hide suicide poisons, secret messages, and microfilm.

These days civilians can tote around a hollow coin too. They're available in many denominations (nickel, quarter, half dollar, and so on), and some come with a MicroSD card that fits inside the coin. With 32 gig MicroSD cards now available, you can carry around a lot of information in your pocket. Just don't accidentally stick the coin in a vending machine!

To see how hollow coins work, watch this review from the guys at ITS Tactical:

Mobile Spy App

Your smartphone contains sensitive information. If by chance it gets into enemy hands (or somebody who simply picks up your misplaced phone), you might want to know what they're looking at and doing with it. The Mobile Spy App lets you do just that. Simply install the app on the phone you want to track and boot up Mobile Spy software on your desktop to see what phone calls and text messages the crook is making and the photos they're taking. You can even open up a screen to watch a live view of your smartphone's screen.

Spy Tie

A common intelligence-collecting tactic is for a spy to carry a discreet looking object that's actually a recording device. The Spy Tie allows you to pull off this trick with style. What looks like a normal necktie is actually a hi-res video recorder. Simply put on the Spy Tie like you would any other necktie. When you're ready to record your target, hit the record button on a standard-looking key fob. The video is downloaded later to a computer for review.

Note: Before you go out and get all record-happy with your Spy Tie, make sure you understand the laws governing recording without people's consent.

Dropp App

Since Ancient Roman times, spies have used "dead drops" to pass on information to fellow agents without having to see them face-to-face. The way dead drops typically worked was that one agent would conceal secret information inside an innocuous-looking item (such as a taxidermied, hollowed-out rat) and drop it on the side of the road or in a public park. Then another agent would come by later and casually pick it up.

The Dropp iPhone app takes this ancient espionage technique and updates it for today's smartphone world. The Dropp app allows you to send messages or photos to other Dropp users as soon as they arrive at a specified location. The app uses the iPhone's GPS capabilities to deliver the location-based messages. You could use Dropp to create a romantically suspenseful secret agent-themed date. Just install the app on your date's phone and create scavenger hunt-like clues that will appear whenever she successfully finds the locations you marked in Dropp.

RFID and Cell Phone Blocking Faraday Pouch

While cell phones and new RFID technology have certainly made life easier for us, they're a double-edged sword. That same technology that allows Nebraskan tourists to navigate NYC easily and you to quickly make payments with your RFID credit card can also be used to track your location and steal sensitive financial information.

To counter Big Brother, enemy spies, and the growing number of thieves and hackers using RFID transmitters to steal credit card info, keep your cell phone and credit cards in a Faraday pouch. Faraday pouches are made from a metallically-lined fabric that blocks cell phone signals as well as RFID transmitters. The downside is that nobody will be able to call you if your phone's in the pouch, but then again, maybe that's actually a plus.

As the number of users grows, so does the content. By pinning between friends (repinning) or pinning links from a favorite site, you control what you want to be saved. Think of Pinterest as a online poster board covered in clippings of photos; as you click on each photo, you're taken to the associated web link.
Because of the way it's set up, we've found Pinterest to be an ideal tool for planning and organizing your weekly recipes all in one place. It just takes a few minutes to set up, and off you go.

Now that you've found some great recipes, it's time to get organized. Try out our ideas to help you organize your new mouth-watering faces.

Stay on track with your diet by keeping a board for each day of the week. For example, on Monday's board, you could list a morning smoothie recipe, lunch, snack, and dinner. Create your entire meal plan day by day, eliminating the need for a quick Taco Bell run.

You can also categorize recipes by diet preference. Maybe you're a vegetarian, but you also like to incorporate dishes with no carbs. Set up a board for each preference, so when you're craving something in particular, you can get exactly what you need.

If you cook for guests and love to entertain, make a different board for eating within each season. Begin with a few dishes on the board for summer barbecues, or create a winter stew board. You could also do the same for meals for specific holidays, such as a Thanksgiving board or a holiday dinner board -- the choice is up to you.

Now that you're loaded with an arsenal of knowledge, it's time to get your nom-nom on. Happy pinning!

Got a recipe you love on Pinterest?
