5 Great Sites for Artwork & Posters
By Kate Pruitt (from Design Sponge) on February 28, 2012
I've recently become quite passionate about expanding my art collection. Even though my budget is small and my walls are limited, I'm still determined to surround myself with things I find beautiful, and support the creative communities of the world however I can. There are some incredible online resources for artwork and posters these days, and I wanted to share my list of favorites that might still be flying a little under the radar. Whether you have a massive wall begging for art, or a little nook in your home you're dying to fill, these sites are well-curated, easily searchable, and filled with amazing artwork, prints, and posters that you won't find anywhere else. Enjoy! I'd love to know: where did you get your favorite piece of art of poster, and where is it in your home?
Buy Some Damn Art:
This is a recent venture from Kate Singleton of Art Hound. Her impeccable taste has brought tons of avid readers to her blog (myself included), and now she's channeled her love of emerging artists into curating the offerings at BSDA. Each week a new series of works by a particular artist become available. The greatest part of BSDA is that the prices are very affordable, and you're getting original artworks: collage, painting, drawing--you get to see the details of the artists' process because you have the original piece. I love prints, but it's nice to be able to admire a painted canvas up close. BSDA makes this possible for the majority of art lovers out there who lack exorbitant budgets for art collecting.

Little Paper Planes:
Little Paper Planes is a wonderful example of how artist make wonderful curators. I might be biased, but I think that they bring a certain idiosyncratic vision to a collection that I just love to see. Founded in 2004 by California based artist Kelly Lynn Jones, Little Paper Planes offers a wonderful selection of art, apparel, and independent publications. The organization is entirely artist run, and provides interviews with featured artists as well. It's a wonderful site to visit for gift giving, art collecting, and the opportunity to support an independent creative community.

Park Life:
If you're planning a trip to San Francisco, a trip to the Park Life gallery and shop in the Inner Richmond should be high on your to-do list--especially if you pair it with a meal at Burma Superstar which is fortuitously located just across the street. Park Life boasts one of the best collections of prints I've seen, including some hard-to-find works from some major bay area greats: Clare Rojas, Tauba Auerbach, Shaun O'Dell, Paul Wackers, and more. If you have a modest budget and you're looking to start or supplement an art collection, this is a fabulous place to look.

The Beholder:
The Beholder has become a well known marketplace for collectors and artists in recent years, yet it continues to offer reasonable prices for limited edition works. There photography selection is particularly strong, but I also love browsing their paintings and drawings to hunt down new pieces for my walls. One great features is that you can search by size or medium. If you have a perfect spot for a piece of artwork or a very particular idea of what you're looking for, the Beholder is a great place to look.
