Top 6 Art and Culture News Sites
By Alice Yoo (from My Modern Met) on December 5, 2011
With art and culture sites being a dime a dozen these days, it's hard to figure out which ones are actually worth your valuable time. In fact, if you love keeping up-to-date on new and exciting museum exhibits or just the latest pop culture news, it now makes more sense to find sites that can aggregate this information for you, ones that curate their content so well that you only need to follow their site (or a few more). Today, we've chosen six sites that do just that. Not only do they showcase rising creative talent, they'll also keep you on top of the latest art and culture news.1. Art Daily

Called "The First Art Newspaper on the Net," Art Daily is a great resource to find the latest news on what's going on in the art world. Founded by Ignacio Villarreal in 1996, this website will tell you about the newest exhibitions at museums all around the world. Can't make it? Its Best Photos of the Day section will quickly and visually show you what's happening. They'll even tell you which particular fine art pieces are being sold at record breaking prices or which art installations are really worth the visit.
Tip: Art lovers, search through Art Daily's deep archive to find over 50,000 articles on current and past exhibitions. This site also has a list of artists, museums and photographers you can search through by name.
2. Art Observed

To keep up with the latest news in the contemporary art market, check out Art Observed. This curated site takes a look at fine art, suggesting specific gallery exhibits you should see. Like Art Daily, it will keep you updated on results at auction houses such as Sotheby's and Christie's. Unlike Art Daily, however, it also conducts interviews and takes its own on-the-ground photos at certain shows. Though based in New York, this blog does a stellar job at covering major art events all around the globe. With a monthly readership of between 100,000 and 200,000 art enthusiasts, Art Observed is a major source of news for those with a penchant for contemporary art.
TIp: If you enjoy this site, check out Art Observed's Links section where they've listed out, in alphabetical order, some similar art related websites you can explore.
3. NotCot

NotCot is your go-to site if you love discovering new experiences related to design, art, architecture and technology. Arranged in neat boxes, its photos are clickable which means you can dive deeper and find out more about the item if you so wish. As a "visual filtration" of ideas, NotCot is one of the best sites to find creative inspiration, to see what the latest trends are and to hear just what everyone's talking about. From unbelievable art to memorable experiences, NotCot will open your eyes up to a whole new world of possibilities.
Tip: If you enjoy NotCot.org make sure to check out founder Jean Awe's other sites including Tasteologie (for food), Liquirious (for drinks) and NotCouture (for fashion).
4. Neatorama

Similar to BoingBoing, Neatorama is a very popular blog that showcases a wide range of weird and wonderful things. By reporting on the latest news under technology, science, art, and other subjects, there's a little something for everyone. If you like odd or bizarre news, you'll feel like you're right at home at Neatorama because it seeks out those types of stories. From photos of cute rodents eating pasta to fantastic crochet taxidermy animals, you'll always find funny and creative posts here.
Tip: If you're looking for the perfect gift to give the person who has everything, take a look inside Neaorama's online shop. You'll find some great geeky and cute gifts like products inspired by your favorite pop culture character like Angry Birds and and Darth Vader.
5. Buzzfeed

From viral videos to obscure news and juicy gossip, Buzzfeed is your place to see what the social web is talking about. Buzzfeed scours partner sites like Time, Huffington Post, College Humor and TMZ, and then uses its own algorithm to rank them in importance. The front page shows a list of posts from both users and Buzzfeed's own staff members. While this site leans more towards pop culture than art, it still has its share of creative content.
Tip: If you're a website owner yourself, you can find out how viral your own content is by using their Viral Dashboard. Though built for Buzzfeed Editors, it's useful for anyone who wants to track the popularity of their posts.
6. The Daily What

Under the Cheezburger network, which 16.5 million people come to get their daily dose of laughter, is The Daily What. This culture site is a place to find hilarious videos, offbeat news, as well as some interesting and inspiring stories. The Daily What will both entertain you and inform you of what's happening in the world today. Though there's no shortage of cat videos on this site, sprinkled amongst it are serious stories that touch on everything from sports to politics.
Tip: Started as a Tumblr site, The Daily What is now a blog. You can still look through their content on their Tumblr blog, however.
