5 Top Games for the Nintendo 3DS

nintendo_3ds.jpgThe Nintendo 3DS is the newest in gaming technology. With the price drop, the 3DS is more affordable to all types of gamers. Here are my top five game picks that will showcase the best of what the 3DS hardware has to offer.

The Nintendo 3DS has led a bumpy road until recently.  To help encourage sales, Nintendo dropped the price on the 3DS from $249 to $169.99.  A new color was announced as well. The color choices are Aqua Blue, Cosmo Black, and Flame Red. The 3DS hardware does provide for a very unique gaming experience. The depth slider allows for players to choose a level of 3D that they are comfortable with or turn it off all together. The hardware is backwards compatible which means it will play all the DS titles, but there are many 3DS titles to look forward to. The following is a combination of titles that are out now, and games to get excited about this holiday season (not in any particular order).

1. Built In 3DS Games
The 3DS comes with quite a few great gaming experiences on it's own. Gamers can create a Mii for their 3DS and take it on the road to Street Pass. My friends are addicted to this service! With StreetPass activated, Mii data, recent gameplay and other information is exchanged with other 3DS owners. You'll then get to see new Mii characters in the Mii plaza when you start playing. StreetPass features of the Nintendo 3DS is absolutely addictive and perfect for conventions. Some games will take advantage of Street Pass and send pictures or items to your network of Miis.

The 3DS also comes with Augmented Reality games. Gamers just place an AR Card on the table or floor and the 3DS camera reads the card and starts a game stage or action on the screen. Another bundled game that uses the 3DS camera is Face Raiders. Face Raiders puts your face on a shooting target. Gamers then move the 3DS all around (using the gyroscope feature) to find targets all around them to shoot at.

mariokart7.jpg 2. It Wouldn't be Nintendo Without a Mario Game - Mario Kart 7
I played this title at E3 this year and it is a blast! Mario Kart is a classic racing game with a dash of being mischievous added. Racers battle to get to the finish line first, but along the way get powerups that can help slow down their competition. Mario Kart 7 was probably my favorite 3DS title that I played at E3 2011. The basics are very similar to previous versions of Mario Kart, but there are new capabilities added. New tracks and the ability to fly or go under water. The 3D affect works really well with the game, and I found myself fully immersed.

super-street-fighter-iv-3ds.jpg 3. Best Fighting title - Super Street Fighter IV
Graphically, Super Street Fighter IV is the best game out currently for the 3DS. Personally, I have always loved the Street Fighter series and Capcom has done a great job of taking advantage of the abilities of the 3DS. Wireless online gameplay works well and StreetPass allows trophies to level up for wireless battles against random opponents. It's not a console version of Street Fighter, but it's still a great gaming experience.

I played Gabrielle's Ghostly Groove from Natsume at E3 this year by accident. I did not have an appointment, but the cute, gothic lolita graphics called me in. Gabrielle sneezed her soul right out of her body. To get it back, she has to travel to Monster town. There she has to win dance challenges to scare up the power to get her soul back. The graphics are adorable, the music is fun and so if this game. I think it's great for kids to play and parents to play with their kids. Although it was recently delayed, but worth getting once it's out.

animal_crossing.png5. Best Community Sim - Animal Crossing
Animal Crossing is an adorable sim where characters socialize with neighbors and complete tasks to earn "money". The money can be used to purchase things to decorate houses or clothing. The graphics have been improved in this 3DS version. The villages are larger than in previous versions and sims can now swim. We still have a lot more to learn about this title, but I'm certain that it will use the various aspects of the 3DS hardware to expand the gamer's experience.

You may have noticed that I left off The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. While this is a fan favorite, I could not put it on my list of top five games to look forward to because I don't find it worthy of a purchase. The title is an exact port of the original game. The only difference is now it has 3D elements. At E3, I struggled to get around and work with the controls. It left me very discouraged. I think The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D will make a very good rental or used game purchase. With the titles above and titles to still be announced, I think any 3DS gamer should be excited about what's in store for them!

These five games will make any Nintendo gamer happy. Let us know what games you are looking forward to or if you have any questions about the 3DS hardware in the comments below.
