8 Essential Discount Shopping Sites for Men
By Tim Jacobsen (from Cool Material) on December 19, 2010
The word shopping generally results in a collective grunt of disgust
from the male community, but it doesn't have to. You can fill out your
wardrobe - or buy a whole new one - without ever leaving your desk.
Here's your list of the 8 best shopping sites for men. If we missed any,
make sure to leave us a message below and set us straight.
Gilt ManGilt Man is the worst, best-kept secret in the world of men's shopping. The "invitation only" site has a carefully curated selection of all the stuff you lust after on a regular basis (Maurice Lacroix watches, Ralph Lauren Purple Label, Adriano Goldschmied jeans) at up to 70% off. There's also an iPhone app so you'll never have to worry about staff meetings interfering with the 12pm sale starts.
Back Country Outlets
Back Country is a multi-headed beast of a shopping network composed of: Whiskey Militia, Tramdock, Bonk Town, Chainlove and Steep and Cheap. Like Woot, each site sells one product at a time until it's gone. Unlike Woot, you don't have to wait until tomorrow if you don't like the product. Once one product is gone, the next comes up. You want premium bike gear? Roll over to Bonk Town or Chainlove. Skiing? Tramdock. Boarding (skate and snow) and accessories? Whiskey Militia and Steep and Cheap.
Jack Threads
Jack Threads is a multiple sale, multiple day (3 days in this case), multiple brand website just like Gilt Man and Haute Look. Unlike the other two, Jack Threads doesn't waste sale space with home furnishings and gifts for the fairer sex - Jack is all about you. New shoes, watches, and headphones with a street wear bent.
Woot Network
What's the most productive thing you've done at 12:00am on a Tuesday? If you don't know about Woot, it's probably sleep. If you're a Woot-er, you've probably purchased a TV, an ironic t-shirt, a bottle (or 5) of red, and/or countless other gadgets, gizmos, and doohickeys you don't really need - but desperately want. When the stuff is this cheap, of course your bathroom needs a 42" Vizio tv. At 12:00am every day, Woot posts one, and only one, product on each of their sites (Woot, Wine.Woot, Shirt.woot). That product stays up until it's gone or 24 hours go by. When it's gone, it's gone forever so make sure you're checking diligently.
Special Note: Every so often, Woot has a rapid-fire sale called a Woot Off. Once one product sells out, the next goes up. This goes on for 24hrs, 48hrs, a weekend, or as long as the people at Woot see fit.
Ideeli
Ideally, with a community of likeminded individuals as big as the Internet, putting together some killer sales shouldn't be that difficult. With Ideeli, it isn't. Every day, Ideeli hooks users up with designer deals on the stuff they want. Watches, clothes, accessories and home furnishings from brands like Kangol, Seiko, and Perry Ellis. Every 40 hours there's a new sale.
Rue La La
We know what you you're thinking. Rue La La sounds as manly as Fabio or crème brûlée and around 75% of the time, you're right. You could use your half off discount at Rue La La to pick her up gifts in advance, but that's not why it's on the list. Every once in a while, Rue La La gets "boutiques" chock full of stuff you want. Skagen watches, Nike footwear and Cullen sweaters just to name a few. Sign up for the e-mail list and wait patiently. In the end, it will be worth it.
Shop it to Me
Generally, as men, we aren't fixated with labels. Style, comfort, and cost are much more important to the average man than the designer who puts his name on your jeans. Until you find that one piece of clothing - from that one designer - that you can't live without. The list of designers you love starts to grow and your productivity at work starts to fall. Shop it to Me gives you more time to read web comics and catch up on slacking off with their SaleMails. Create an account, select all your favorite designers, and Shop it to Me delivers all your designer's sales right to your inbox.
Haute Look
Haute Look is the new kid on the block in the list of sites like Jack Threads and Gilt Man. It's got some aspects of each of them: referral credits, iPhone app, goods for men, women, and children. Why's Haute Look different? Because the new guy always spices things up - like selling a $450 designer leather jacket for $158.00
New online shopping sites have a way of popping up overnight. If our list is missing anything, don't hesitate to set us straight in the comments.
