Forget Happy Halloween. Happy Geek-o-ween!
By Lisa Frame (from Clever Girls Collective) on October 11, 2010
Wonder Woman was my Halloween costume of choice when I was a little
girl. She was nimble, beautiful, always ready to take on the bad guys,
and definitely well accessorized. I loved the way she moved her wrists to block
bullets and flew her clear airplane - I thought she was the
most amazing woman in the world. These days, I'm still trying to be Wonder Woman by embracing my inner geek. On any normal day, I look like your average suburban housewife. However, lurking in my purse are things that would make some people gush. Mobile phone, iPod, iPad, camera, and on occasion I cram my laptop in there too.
This year Halloween is going to be uber-geeky for my family. My son, at the ripe age of 10, has decided that he doesn't want to trick-or-treat anymore, however I might have talked to him into it by promising to make a costume with all the bells and whistles. He's a self-proclaimed geek, so I felt there a few things that would be right up his alley.
First up, a Lego mini-figure costume! Not only does it look like a mini-figure, it can be made for adults as well!
Underoos were the thing back in the 70's. While I was Wonder Woman, my friend next door was Batman. Since we can't get by with wearing our Underoos in public anymore without getting cited for indecent exposure (although our celeb friends would do well to actually remember to wear theirs at all), it's time we helped the men in our lives embrace their inner Batman! After all, he drove the sexy car, and every single time he threw a punch there were great sound effects. Here are a series of YouTube videos that show you how to create your own DIY Batman costume.
Moving on from toys and superheros... My iPod is a well-used friend. Since I can't use my laptop when I live blog the opera, I use my iPod touch. It's been a life saver in situations where I can only get by carrying an evening bag. But, what if I wanted to dress up as an iPod, albiet the more colorful iPod Nano? DeviousDemi gives a great tutorial on how to fix your face, what accessories to wear and how to put together a great costume without spending a lot of time on it.
Personally, I want to make a Wii costume this year after finding this video. The addition of actual working LED lights are fantastic. My sides hurt after trying to visualize getting it to fit in the car, or through my front door.
If you're really looking to invest in a Halloween costume that will make you the hit of the party for years to come, check out Reko Rviera's and John Savo's realistic iPhone 3GS costume made from a 42" LCD TV. They managed to hack the software on the iPhone to show a live dual image in landscape mode. While pricey at about two thousand dollars, if it really is the costume of your dreams, you can email John Savo at guy phones (at) gmail dot com for details of how to create your own iPhone costume.
Surprisingly, iPad costume tutorials are in short supply, but one easy one is the iPad Helmet. If you're like me, your iPad doesn't leave your side. Now you can mount it to a trash can and let it give you rotating monster faces.
Hopefully this gives you some ideas for awesome (and geeky) Halloween costumes. Because after all, just because you really can't store 80 gigs of data in your head, doesn't mean you can't fake it by dressing the part.
