Creating Your Digital Camera Wish List
By Shutter Sisters (from Clever Girls Collective) on October 28, 2010
When it comes to camera equipment, like other tech gadgets, the list of
latest and greatest gear changes by the minute. It's not always easy to
decide what to add next to your camera bag of tricks. No two
photography wish lists are alike because where we're each at on our
photographic journey will pretty much dictate what the best next move
will be. As much as my philosophy is "it's not the camera, it's the photographer behind it", I won't deny that quality equipment can help take our creative efforts to the next level. From amateurs to burgeoning pros, there is something for everyone who might be looking to up their photography game.
If you're not quite ready to let go of the ease and convenience of a point-and-shoot but still want to take amazing photos, then why not pick the point-and-shoot that acts like a DSLR? Enter the "high end" Canon PowerShot S90.

With bragging rights of a fast lens, high ISO and even RAW capture options, this little baby offers what most DSLRs offer. That might not mean much to someone who doesn't speak photography, but it can be simply translated to mean that this point-and-shoot will take mighty fine photos, even in less that optimal light which is a huge plus. PC world breaks it all down in their review of the Canon PowerShot S90. The newer model, the S95 is available now as well.
Now, let's say you're really ready to take your photography up a notch from a point-and-shoot. That's easy! There are "entry level" SLRs that are perfect (and more affordable and usually a little less cumbersome than more sophisticated options) that will be just what you need to capture both daily life and big events. DSLR are worth the investment if you're really into photography because they offer lots of creative growing room as you wean yourself from all auto to actually befriending the bells and whistles. Both Canon and Nikon have excellent entry level options.

I won't go into the battle of the brands here because Gizmodo nailed it already (although they compare last years Canon, it's still an awesome throw down). You really can't go wrong with either the Canon EOS Rebel T2i or the Nikon D5000. Both of these camera bodies are often found included in a kit (meaning the body and lens are packaged together with a reasonable price tag) but so many people grow out of their kit lenses so quickly, I would never rule out buying the body alone so you can spend the extra money on the lens you really want.
Most photographers will tell you that what truly makes a positive impact in your work is the lens you use. A common favorite is the "Nifty Fifty" or the 50mm prime lens. Both the Canon 50mm 1.8 and the Nikon 50mm 1.8 go for under $150 and are fast enough to provide the dreamy shallow depth of field you're after. Take it small step further (emphasis on small) and get the 50mm 2.5, Compact Macro. This gem gives you the option of a macro lens when you want to really get in close.
If you are looking for crème of the crop of DSLR, consider either the Canon EOS 7D or the Nikon d7000 (insert heavenly music here). Sure, they are investments--with the bodies alone ranging from $1600-$1200--but when you're writing up a wish list, you get to dream big, right?
