6 Office Gadgets for Getting Fit at Work
By Erica Swallow (from Mashable) on August 9, 2010
Here are six office gadgets for getting fit while you're at work. Hopefully you'll be feeling better in no time. Let us know in the comments below which gadgets you're exercising with while on the job.
1. Gamercize GZ PC-Sport Power Stepper, $249 Burn 200 to 400 calories per hour while seated at your desk by using this mini stepper. It fits neatly under your desk, and connects to your computer's USB port, disabling your mouse and keyboard if you're not exercising as you work. Nifty, right? If you need to take a break, you can set the stepper to the lowest setting to use your keyboard and mouse without exercising.
2. USB Stress Ball, $19.99
If the company-branded foam stress balls aren't doing the trick for you, check out the USB Stress Ball -- it hooks up to your computer and pulverizes the image on your screen when you squeeze, twist, squash and smash it. Check out Think Geek to see this clever stress reliever in action.
3. USB Massage Ball Therapy, $3.99
Plug this massage ball into your computer via a USB port and massage away. With a 1.5 meter-length cord, you should be able to reach just about anywhere.
4. NSD Powerball Hand Gyroscope, $24.99
Once you get the NSD Powerball's rotor going, it generates from one to 40 pounds of resistance, toning your arms and wrists and building muscle with smooth, non-impact action. This gadget is ideal for rehabilitating lower forearm and wrist joints affected by carpal tunnel syndrome, repetitive strain injury (RSI), or arthritis.
If the Powerball is a bit too difficult to hold onto while it's moving, try the Arm Shaper, which comes with gripping handles.
5. Gaiam BalanceBall Chair, $99.98
The Gaiam BalanceBall Chair was developed by Chiropractor Dr. Randy Weinzoff as a "tool for strengthening core muscles and improving spinal alignment." Improve your posture while you're at your desk or remove the exercise ball for workouts.
6. Walkstation Treadmill Desk, $4,199
If you spent most of your day sitting, either at work, home, or in a car, you're putting yourself at a higher risk for obesity, diabetes, heart disease, a variety of cancers and an early death, according to a number of recent studies. So, get out of your chair! Standing and walking while working helps you improve circulation, burn calories and lose weight. Want to take it to the next level? There's also a treadmill desk. It's not cheap but people who've used them claim the treadmill desk leads to more energy, better concentration, and lost weight. If you already have a treadmill, another option is a TrekDesk adjustable height desk you can attach to your existing treadmill. It's considerably cheaper at $479.
If you can't quite make the jump to walking while working, an entry level option to getting fit is standing. There are quite a few stand-up desk offerings. Start with a simple Google search for "stand-up desk" and you're on your way.
