Great YouTube Channels for Fashionistas
By Samuel Axon (from Mashable) on June 8, 2010
YouTube is a great source for web savvy fashionistas looking for style
tips, as it's host to thousands of videos about everything from the
basics of looking presentable to the most avant-garde trends. 1. Style.com
Vogue, a.k.a. the fashion bible, launched Style.com to share some of its articles on the web, along with some special features unique to the Internet like insider looks at the fashion industry -- interviews, commentary and luscious images of people wearing new looks for the upcoming season.
Unlike a lot of the other channels in this list, you won't find much in the way of advice in Style's library, but it's a solid resource if you're curious about the movers and shakers in the industry and want to be at the cutting edge of what's happening around today's runways and design studios, from New York to Rome.
2. VideoFashion
Just about every day VideoFashion features interviews with a designer who showcases his or her work and explains it alongside runway footage. If you want to see the personalities behind the clothes this channel is a prime resource with its heavy focus on the creative talent responsible for your favorite dress. Bonus- every video has been in high definition since 2005, so you can really see the details that make the clothes so special.
The channel is associated with a website of the same name; head there and you'll see that this team is totally committed to original content. It uses only videos shot by its own camera operators and cut by its own editors. VideoFashion has been documenting designers and models since 1976, and much of its library is available online in case you want a course in recent fashion history.
3. BritPopPrincess
This channel by British YouTube beauty maven Trish will get your head out of the runway clouds and back to reality, doling out tips and insights on the every day clothes best suited for a young woman with a real-world budget.
Trish also spends a lot of time talking about makeup and hair as well, but it's all part of the bigger package. This channel is about personal lifestyle, not tracking the every clothing item worn by the rich and famous. If you want to be your own style icon it's worth checking out.
4. Style Served Daily (TheStyleDiet)
Anna Saccone calls herself "the #1 Irish female on YouTube," and she's known for maintaining a helpful presence on social networks like Twitter. She pushes out a regular supply of fashion advice videos, but they're not as much about specific clothes or brands as they are about attitude. She won't tell you what brand of skinny jean you should be wearing, rather she tells her viewers how to wear skinny jeans.
She's a practical woman and gives tips for different situations, like the video included here offers advice on what to wear (or what not to wear) on a first date. It's all about who you are and how your clothes make you feel, not making objective judgments about bad or good fashion. That philosophy has earned her an impressive 24,000 subscribers.
5. Expert Village: Celebrity Fashion
Expert Village (now owned by eHow) cranks out a huge number of videos on a whole bunch of topics, but fashion is among them, and this series stands out in particular. Each video is a two minute guide to emulating the fashion of a specific celebrity style icon -- for example, famous tattoo artist Kat Von Dee is the subject of the video included here.
6. Ask a Gay Man (William Sledd)
Ask a Gay Man's William Sledd is one of the most popular vloggers on YouTube -- or at least he was before he stopped putting out videos on a regular basis.
Still, the Kentucky-based vlogger has a backlog of dozens of entertaining and helpful videos about summer fashions, do's and don'ts, makeup how-tos and on-the-ground runway coverage from Fashion Week. Styles may have changed in the past few months, but the wisdom is just as sound.
