YouTube is pretty much a vast video wasteland of cute cats, funny babies, and people subjecting themselves to unnecessary pain and discomfort. But if you look hard enough, you can find some fantastic YouTube channels that are dedicated to educating and informing the masses, completely for free.
In my years running the Art of Manliness, I’ve encountered several YouTube channels of particular interest to men. Here are my top five favorites:
Antonio Centeno is a regular contributor to the Art of Manliness, the owner of the online custom suit company A Tailored Suit, and the author of the Real Men Real Style blog. Recently, he has taken to YouTube to share his years of experience with men’s style on his RMRS style advice channel. In just a year, Antonio has created the internet’s most comprehensive video style library, with over 248 videos covering all aspects of men’s style. You’ll find videos on everything from how to dress sharp in cold weather to matching a Navy blazer with trousers. The best thing about Antonio’s advice is that it’s simple, easy to follow, and timeless; you can still bank on it five years from now.
Like the legendary Charles Atlas, Chad Howse transformed himself from a skinny weakling into a muscular and powerful man. On his YouTube channel, he shows the workouts and exercises he used to build his body, so you can get fit too. Chad’s a friendly and passionate guy, who sincerely wants to help men be their best, but his workouts aren’t for the faint of heart! Many of them are inspired by workouts used by fighters to get in peak fighting condition. You’ll even find videos on how to box. Whether you’re looking to get functionally fit or sculpt that masculine shaped torso, Chad will show you how.
Fulfill your fantasy of becoming a real-life Jason Bourne by subscribing to the ITS Tactical YouTube Channel. The ITS in ITS Tactical stands for “Imminent Threat Solutions.” The military and special ops veterans at ITS Tactical are dedicated to showcasing the gear and information you need in order to survive and thrive in tactical situations. Their YouTube channel features gear reviews of the latest tactical equipment like knives, guns, and flashlights, as well as tutorials that demonstrate awesome tactical skills like escaping tie handcuffs or performing a J-turn while driving.
If you’re looking for a fun project to do this weekend, look no further than Make Magazine’s YouTube Channel. You’ll find all sorts of geektastic and hackerific video tutorials like making a Truth Meter or a Solar TV Remote. If you were inspired by our article on arduino projects to start exploring the world of open-source electronics, here you’ll find dozens of videos demonstrating how to build some cool stuff with the humble arduino.
Pathfinder Wilderness Survival School
You’ve probably seen Dual Survival on the Discovery Channel. Remember the non-hippy guy on the show? His name is Dave Canterbury, and he’s the founder and owner of the Pathfinder Wilderness Survival School in Indiana. A class with Dave at his compound costs about $300, but thanks to YouTube, you can get one-on-one lessons from him for free. Dave has uploaded hundreds of survival tutorials to YouTube ranging from how to start fires without matches to how to trap wild game. Watch them and you’ll be ready for the apocalypse… or your next camping trip.
