You know what drives me crazy? When I am trying to find breaking news
about a team or an athlete or a coach and I go to check out my favorite
sports blogs and they are loaded with pictures of women in bikinis
draped over cars.
I love sports blogs. I do. I subscribe to about 60 of them (oh, I wish that were an exaggeration). I run a sports blog, I go to sports blogging conferences, I am on sports blogging advisory boards but sometimes the misogyny drives me insane.
I want to read about sports – real sports – without being bombarded with soft core. It makes me nuts. Some of the very best sports coverage on the internet panders to the lowest common denominator and also makes the false assumption that all of their readers are straight men that only care about women sports if Venus Williams designed her own outfit.
Women sports fans are everywhere, and we are a growing demographic.
Luckily for you (and me too) I have compiled a list of blogs that are women friendly. Hey! Some of these even cover women’s sports!
1) Women Talk Sports
Women Talk Sports is an amazing source for women’s sporting news and blogs written by women.
3) Gridiron Goddess
It isn’t often that I run across another who woman who loves football as deeply as I do, but Amy is that woman. She is also one heck of a writer!
4) On Frozen Blog
If you like hockey, and especially if you like the Washington Capitals (and I do) you will love On Frozen Blog.
5) Pigskin Loving Lady
Okay, to be fair, her site might not be all that friendly to the guys. Sometimes the photos she posts give me the vapors. *fans self*
6) Chicks in the Huddle
A group blog written by ladies who are truly football fans.
7) Lady at the Bat
This lady knows her baseball.
8) Women’s Hoops Blog
This blog is part of the Seattle Times, but it is written by Jayda Evans and Jayda is truly one of – if not the leading journalist on women’s basketball. I love her insight into the game.
9) The Lady Sportswriter
Sure, she is a huge Georgia Bulldogs fan, but I can forgive her because she knows her football and she writes really well.
10) A Stern Warning
A Stern Warning is a great basketball blog, but if you read nothing else, you have to check out the posts by Sarah Moon. Her NBA Style Watches are the best. The Cardigan Watch is one of my favorite posts ever. Ever!
I’m just going to start you off with these 10, but there are others out there and I’d like to hear your favorites! Sports journalism and sports blogging might still be male dominated, but we are making strides, ladies, and we’re making an impressive showing.
