5 Manly Laptop Bags

manbagPOV.jpgWhen it comes to laptop bags, most men focus on function over
style. Consequently, many men are carrying their laptops around in those
boring, black nylon, corporate-issued laptop bags that end up as the
butt of jokes in a Dilbert comic strip.

Today we’re going to let you in
on a little secret. You don’t have to look like a corporate drone when
you carry a laptop bag. It’s possible to buy a laptop bag that not only
protects your gear, but also looks handsomely rugged and manly. Below
we’ve provided you with five examples of awesomely manly bags that will
harness your inner Indiana Jones, even if you’re just carrying your
laptop up to your office cubicle.

Saddleback Leather Company Laptop Bag saddleback.jpg

The Saddleback Laptop Bag is rugged, manly, and guaranteed to last 100 years, so your grandkids will be fighting over who gets it when you die (if they still have laptops then!). This bag is so handsome looking you’ll get compliments from the TSA agents as you take out your laptop at the security gate.  Made of 100% full grain boot leather, the Saddleback bag will protect your delicate electronic gizmos from the nastiest of elements. The outside of the bag comes with plenty of D-rings to attach umbrellas, water bottles, or the buffalo skull you happened to find on the way to work. As an added bonus, you can use the shoulder strap to convert the bag into a backpack.

Price: $411

Filson Twill Laptop Briefcasefilsonbag.jpg

Since 1897, the Filson Company has supplied outdoorsmen with the clothing and gear they need to rough it out in the wild. They’ve taken their century old philosophy of producing rugged, long-lasting products and applied it to this awesome Made in the USA briefcase. The oil finish twill makes the bag waterproof, so if you’re ever caught in a torrential downpour, you can be assured your laptop is staying dry. Filson’s Twill Laptop Bag comes with two large interior pockets and a compartment to store your computer. You also have smaller interior and exterior pockets to keep your cell phone, business cards, and battery charger tucked away.
Price: $315

Roughrider Briefcaseroughriderbag.jpg

What sort of laptop bag would America’s most manly president, Theodore Roosevelt, use if he were alive today? According to the folks at the Duluth Trading company, it wouldn’t be some shiny black briefcase. No, that sort of bag is for “pusillanimous pussyfooters.” The bag that T.R. would carry would definitely be a bag like the Roughrider Briefcase. To make this bag durable and long lasting, Duluth Trading Company fashioned it out of fire hose cotton and trimmed it with 100% cattle leather.  The Roughrider Briefcase comes with a padded laptop compartment and lots of pockets to store the manly accouterments you’ll need throughout the day.

Price: $112.50

Herds of the Fathers German Boxer Backpackgermanboxer.jpg
This commanding leather backpack is the perfect bag for a college-aged gentleman to tote their laptop around campus. Fashioned from cow antique leather, the German Boxer gives you the durability you need to protect your laptop, while remaining light-weight so you don’t wear yourself out hauling it around from class to class. The bag is secured with nickel silver buckles, so you’ll never have to worry about zipper jams with this bad boy.
Price: $185

Mulholland Vintage Waxed Canvas Angler’s Bagmulholland.jpg
Inspired by the bags expert anglers of yore used to carry their fishing gear, Mulhollands’s Vintage Waxed Canvas Angler’s Bag is a handsome and durable laptop bag for when the outdoorsman has to go to the office or class. The waxed canvas will keep your computer and other gear nice and dry. In addition to the large interior pocket to carry your laptop, the Angler’s Bag comes with several small interior pockets to store iPods, cell phones, pens, or even fishing lures for those lunch time fishing breaks you might take.
Price: $335

While not a specified as a laptop bag, this messenger bag from LLBean does the trick, looks good, and is much more affordable.

If you like canvas and leather, you can’t get much more manly than stuff made by a company that equips folks traveling up in the Boundary Waters.

Duluth Pack has some nice bags. I’ve got one myself, although it wasn’t a “laptop bag” when my wife bought it for me.

I have serious Saddleback envy. I love the look, but can’t justify the pricetag.

I’m quite fond of my Kenneth Cole bag and think it looks very manly:

I use the BACKHAWK! Advanced Tactical Briefcase. It has a waterproof pocket for your laptop (or pistol) plus plenty of space for other accessories without being bulky. I’ve had mine for going on 4 years now and it’s held up very well.

I’ve actually been carrying a Jandd Mountaineering bag for a good 10 years. Looks pretty much like it did when I bought it and has been all over the place with me.

Ever since my birthday back in February, I’ve been using a messenger bag to carry my items to and from work. The bag that I’ve been using is olive drab and is made from recycled waders. The company, Recycled Waders, cleans the waders, pulls them apart, and sews the different pieces back together into various items: wallets, messenger creels, and other angling themed items. The bag I use is called the Messenger Creel and retails for $66. Check them out at: http://www.recycledwaders.com/

I am partial to the KillSpencer Track Bike Bag. It is a bike messenger bag made from top materials that will last a lifetime.

    $450 is well worth it.

The Duluth Trading Company has a great leather bag called the Bashful Billionaire. Its similar to Saddle back Stuff for less then half the price. http://www.duluthtrading.com/store/departments/-specialty-shops/travel-clothes-and-luggage/bags-and-luggage/42004.aspx?feature=product_15

For less pricy options, try Eddie Bauer or REI bags.

Some other great leather-messenger options (I’ve been shopping around for a little while):
$225 – unisex horizontal messenger by dean Leather – http://www.deanaccessories.com/?do=product_details&product_id=278&category_id=18#
    $225 – Artisan Letaher Bag @ J.Crew – http://www.jcrew.com/mens_category/accessories/bags/PRDOVR~70636/70636.jsp
    $320 – The Mailman by White Sycamore – http://www.whitesycamore.com/products/the_mailman/
    $595 – The “Original” Leather Postman @ J.Crew – http://www.jcrew.com/mens_category/accessories/bags/PRDOVR~95683/95683.jsp
    $650 – Imogene + Willie & Emil Erwin Mail bag – http://www.jcrew.com/mens_category/accessories/bags/PRDOVR~35721/35721.jsp
    $795 – Large Postman by Belstaff @ J.Crew – http://www.jcrew.com/mens_category/accessories/bags/PRDOVR~25792/25792.jsp

And Although I am looking for leather to replace a nylon messenger, if you are prone to the dress-down/technical/practical sollution the Patagonia “Half Mass” is a steal at $99.00 – http://www.patagonia.com/us/product/patagonia-half-mass-messenger-bag?p=48274-0-624 And it’s bigger brother Critical Mass at $119 ain’t shabby either.

I’m glad to see a Filson made the list – I have owned several Filson luggage items and they are top notch. But for the money I like the L.L. Bean bags best. The link below is my favorite and I have carried it for a few years now and it keeps geting better looking the older it gets.

I use an old leather briefcase I bought for $8 at a thrift shop. Has room for my laptop, the power cords, a couple of books and a notebook and pencil pouch. Can’t be beat!

On a somewhat related note, I bought my iPad bag from Caine Fashions in the UK, they sell a variety of leather iPad/netbook and laptop and messenger bags and I’m really very happy with it. Assuming the bigger sizes for laptops are as nice as the smaller ipad sized bags I’d definitely recommend them to any UK based men. They were happy to answer the questions I had regards sizing and use before ordering as well.

If anyone is particularly interested I went for the Aberfeldie, was perfect hand luggage for a recent trip to Ibiza.

Yeah, like Derek said Duluth Pack are extremely rugged.
I am amazed that mylifescoop opted to put in Chinese made made bags in place of the “hand made in Minnesota Packs” this is the only business line of goods that I use:

    Great lifetime guarantee too.

I like my Crumpler Zoo Daddy http://www.crumpler.eu/index.cfm?seite=laptop-all&productID=6554&sprache=EN which is kind of a square backpack with more than perfect protection for my notebook.

Go to your local Army/Navy store. Mine has Airborne(paratrooper) bags for $20-45 bucks. No, they aren’t padded, but lets face it, dropping your laptop isn’t going to be a good thing even in a slightly padded bag. Also, old map cases look nice too.

  • http://profile.typepad.com/tabar Andrew Tabar

Redoxx Airborne rucksack. I’ve had mine for over 2 years and it absolutely rocks. Tons of room, too. Redoxx makes other great bags that all are very manly.

Nice examples, those 5! I absolutely agree on being really bored of those black nylon laptop bags! It’s great to have already so many youthful and trendy options to choose from, yet sometimes a man needs a laptop bag which has a more classy and modest appearance. How about this one:

I just received the new Tilley catalog yesterday and it had a great canvas/leather bag in it. It is not on their website yet, but should be later today or in the next few days. It is modeled after a military bag from WWII, I believe. It is better looking than all of the bags above, except the Saddleback.

Most… well all are out of the zone of what I would be comfortable spending on a laptop bag. Love the rugged look of all of them but I’m practical, I have a $30 Case Logic and to make it even more manly, mine smells of Grey Flannel with a hint of Old Spice
